During one of his few travels, John had headed up north and visited with the Dene. Most Cree spoke bad about the Dene, said they were wild as hell. But John found them to be Indians like the rest of them, more into hunting and fishing than most because of their proximity to some of the lushest woods he’d ever seen. Another big difference — they loved their hand games. John figured that since the Dene and the Navaho were long-lost cousins that they would appreciate playing the game of their ancestors. Or at least that is what he tried to sell Sarah. Sarah’s eyes narrowed at his explanation but when he showed her a couple of hundred-dollar bills (his only American ones), she nodded tersely.

John explained the basics of the game: “So we line up in two lines here, and you have four team members, I got four.”

Sarah pointed at a couple of guys who jumped into line.

John looked at Per. “I’ll need you.”

Per stepped into line beside him.

“And next we will have Desiree,” John pointed at her and she smiled and stood on the other side of Per. John searched for Lucas. He was sitting around the fire, his head hanging. A formidable looking woman was standing next to him. “And …” He sighed. “That guy.” He pointed at Lucas, whose eyes lit up like a puppy dog.

Sarah frowned. Then yelled and Lucas was brought over.

Lucas smiled as he got closer to John. “I knew you’d come for me!” He gave John a hard hug.

John pushed him away. “What the hell did you get yourself into?”

“Nothing. I was hanging out, having fun — I think this is a racial thing.”

This little shit was never going to take responsibility for anything. “Get your ass in line.”

Lucas smiled warmly at Per, who pulled him into a hug.

Sarah was standing across from John. Beside her was the same large lady that had been guarding Lucas and a younger slim guy who had the tight body of a boxer. “We have our team. Who will keep score?”

“I will.” All eyes turned to Edna. Where the hell did she come from?

Edna’s chest was heaving so John figured she had hurried over quick. Desiree patted her on the shoulder. “Wow, you really get around, Auntie.”

“Oh, go on now.” Edna pushed away Desiree’s hand. “I know your tricks.”

“Not fair,” Sarah said. “She’s from your area.”

“But she’s as straight as a nun. You all know that,” Desiree explained. “She won’t even pick up a deck of cards at home.”

Sarah looked around the grounds. It was getting sparse as people were packing up their camps. She eyed up Per and then glanced at John. John saw the glimpse of a smirk on her face.

“All right then. Let’s get started.”

Sarah and her team knew the basics. John explained the game to his team. Per and Desiree caught on quick.

Lucas was a harder sell. “I take this rock and hide it in my hand and they guess which hand. But I can’t throw it or hide it in my mouth?”

“What are you, five?” Desiree asked.
